It was our anniversary so we took ourselves off for an overnight trip to Stonehenge about 50 miles away from home.
The earliest evidence of human activity is 10,000 years old in the form of timber post holes. Large scale works took place around 6.500 years ago.
The first monument began around 5,000 years ago which is a circular earth mound. Timber posts were originally used but 4,600 years ago they were swapped for stone. The outer stones weighing about 30 tons and 9-10m (33ft) in height with 2.5m (8ft) in the ground were brought from 30 miles away, The innner stones were brought from about 150 miles away. Can't imagine the time and effort it took to get them there then put them upright.
