For the last few years we have swapped homes for two weeks with Bobs cousin Kathy who lives near Canterbury, Kent. While we were there we met up for lunch and chat with Brenda's cousins, Jean and Vera and their husbands. We visited Rochester Cathedral and took a couple of Photos of Rochester Castle. Rochester Cathedral is England's second oldest, having been founded in 604AD by Bishop Justus. The present building dates back to the work of the French monk, Gundulf, in 1080. Next day we met up with Brenda's school friend Pauline and her husband at Leeds Castle near Maidstone. A castle has been on the site since 1119. The site has a long history but known history begins in the year 857 when a Saxon chief called Led or Leed built a timber structure on the two islands that the castle stands on today.
The current building is relatively new being completed in 1746 and remodelled in 1823.
The castles recent history includes being opened to the public in 1976 and used, being extremely secure in the middle of a lake, for a meeting between the Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohammed Ibrahim Karmel, Israeli Foreign Minister Moshe Dayan and Cyrus Vance of the USA in preparation for the Camp David Accords. The castle also hosted the Northern Ireland peace talks held in September 2004 led by Tony Blair.
