Continuing Brenda's birthday trip.
On our way back home we stayed at a pub/B&B to visit Shepton Mallet Prison. The prison was opened to prisoners in 1625 and when it closed down in 2013 it was Britain's oldest prison. The cells are all single use. Meals are all taken in there cells. When sentenced to hard labour prisoners had to operate the tread mill 15 minutes on the mill and 5 minutes break for twelve hours a day which ground corn etc for use in the kitchens, in other prisons around the country the tread mills didn't do anything..
Prison warders were called screws because they would tightened the screw to make it harder for the prisoners. Many executions by hanging took place and two American soldiers by firing squad
The prison has been used by the British military and the American military during WWII and was used for storing important documents including the Magna Carter, The Doomsday Book And Volumes of the HMS Victory Log Book
